Buying a used car in Qatar can be a smooth process if you know the steps. Here is your essential checklist.
1. The Technical Inspection
Never buy a used car without an independent inspection.
- Do not rely solely on the seller's word or a recent Fahes report (which only checks basic safety).
- Take the car to a reputable testing center on Salwa Road (e.g., German Auto Specialist or similar). They will provide a comprehensive computer diagnostic and check the chassis, engine, and gearbox for roughly QAR 300-500.
2. Check for Fines and Accidents
Before agreeing to buy, ask the seller for the vehicle's chassis number (VIN). You can use the Metrash2 app to check if the car has any outstanding traffic violations or a history of major accidents recorded by the traffic department.
3. The Transfer Process (Metrash2)
Qatar has digitized the ownership transfer process, making it incredibly easy.
- Both the buyer and seller must have the Metrash2 app active.
- The seller initiates the transfer via the app, entering the buyer's QID.
- The buyer receives a notification and accepts the transfer.
- The buyer pays the transfer fee (usually QAR 200) via the app using a credit/debit card.
4. Insurance and Istimara
Once the Metrash2 transfer is complete, the car is legally yours.
- You must immediately arrange insurance (third-party or comprehensive) in your name.
- You can then visit a Traffic Department office (or use Metrash2 if applicable) to print the new Istimara (registration card) in your name.
